Final Allusion Graphic

  1. I decided to use Jessie as my allusion character because I grew up loving the movie Toy Story and I would watch it all the time. Toy Story taught me many life long lessons, which is part of the reason why I chose Jessie. I picture Jessie as a very independent and strong girl who won't let anybody take advantage of her. And that's basically what I stated in my poem. In the movie, she starts off a little bit as a show off. However, once the other toys got to know her, the more vulnerable she got. They began to see her weakness and that was the feeling of abandonment. Despite that, they never used that against her. As a matter of fact, they wanted to help her. But after Jessie was abandoned by her first owner, she felt that she couldn't trust anyone. Over time, Jessie develops a bond with Woody and Buzz who teach her the meaning of friendship and trust.

This relates to me because it's hard for me to trust anybody but myself. I normally don't rely on people because in most cases, I know I'll be disappointed in the very end. My past experiences led me to the insecurities I have today. I've faced many broken promises, torn friendships, and many many disappointments. There were always people there who tried to help me, but as stubborn as I was, I just couldn't take the lending hand. I've learned to stay independent and be centered in my own world. I'm always afraid that if I get close to someone again, they'll leave. Although I'm not quite to the point of trusting someone fully, I'd have to say that I'm gradually and slowly getting there. Like Jessie, it takes time for me to get to that point.

At first, I have to admit that I was pretty iffy about what an allusion poem was. I got it confused with a metaphor. This assignment is pretty much going about who you are and looking deeper into yourself while comparing yourself to a character, a phrase, etc. other than an object. This allusion poem helps you to answer the unanswered question.. 'Who am I?' Apart from that, the exercises on the promethean and the examples we got helped me a lot to better understand what an allusion poem is. Writing my poem started off as a challenge to me because I had no ideas whatsoever. However, what did help me was the bubble map and how we had to map our traits and characteristics, along with the traits and characteristics of your character.

In my poem, one thing that I really wanted to work on was my voice. Because this was an allusion poem, I wanted to bring my voice out the most without giving away the surprise. I feel that voice makes the whole poem strong because of how personal it can get. And that's what I wanted. I wanted to make my poem strong enough for the audience to understand who I am as a person, as well as what I'm trying to get at. I also definitely tried to use as much word choice as possible in order to 'show, not tell'. This brought out the comparison between Jessie and I.

My graphic does a good job portraying the whole aspect of Jessie and I. The bottom pictures of she and I show how we feel on the inside because of our weakness. However, there's she and I at the top smiling because we know that we can overcome it somehow and over time, we'll develop strength and courage through the use of friendship and trust. Along with my graphic, I added in a quote from my poem. This line, I would have to say is actually my favorite part of the poem. It's not too broad, yet it doesn't give away and I feel that's what made the poem powerful and compelling. Behind it are 'action' pictures of my friends and I and this goes to show that there are still people whom I'll always love and care about and who'll always be there in the toughest of times.

  2. Hi Melissa,
Nice job on both your poem and reflection. The background graphics give the overall allusion graphic a bit more depth and illustrate one of the ideas you wanted to convey in the poem. The reflection on your creative process was great--thoughtful and well organized.
    Great job!
